Berliner könnten sich also gelangweilt fühlen.
Last night i attended the Red Ink Label Night in the Club “Lido”. The club is located in the north of Kreuzberg near Oberbaumbrücke, East Side Gallery and Treptower Park. It used to be a cinema but was tranformed into a club 1 1/2 years ago. It became a very nice club with great sound und a good line-up, just to name upcoming stuff: 06.10. Broken Social Scene, 01.11. Cold War Kids, 27.11. Gravenhurst. At the moment the Popkomm, an international music convention where labels and related business people present their stuff and extend their network is taking place and this label night was somehow embedded into the Popkomm. Red Ink is a label working with big names like Modest Mouse, Gossip and Goose. The night was presented by the famous Karrera Club, who are one of the biggest if not the biggest indie-party-booking-organisators in berlin. They book whatever is hyped or upcoming in the international indie business or is just good music.
The night lured me with the rather cheap presale tickets for 14 Euros and the hard-loved Goose from Belgium. The sign in front of the club said “Sold-Out” in big black characters. The two support bands aren’t worth being noticed a lot. The german “Tent” played old-school college-rock. “The Checks” from Newzeeland ripped their parts from AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and The Kings of Leon. Both bands were respectable but boring and apart from some ravekids dancing around with their glowing neonbracelets the audience was not touched a lot.
Goose enter the stage just when the club was finally filled completely. Instant applause arose. Three keyboards, two guitars, one bass, one drumset. They started with their albumintro “black gloves”, played “bring it on” right away as second track and gave the audience the discret feeling that this is the level of energy the gig is based on. All in all they play banging hit after hit from their hit-infected debut-album. The audience is extremely amused and shows its appreciating by dancing, raving, pogo, jumping, clapping, singing along and crying from happyness. There is nothing to be misunderstood. This is rockparty and that is a rockband using the means of electro/techno/house to make the crowd lose their head even more. They know excactly how to control the masses, every climax, every breakdown, every build-up, everytime the bassdrum or the snare enters again is carefully planned and fail-proven. They cant do any wrong, their music is aimed on purpose and it is working. It can be said: They are rocking with routine. This loss of spontaneity leading to a lack of sympathy combined with the fact that the gig only lasted half an hour are the big minus. Nethertheless you cant do any wrong with goose. See you next time.
